twice as much as before

The exhibition ‘No, No, No, No’ was a point of departure for artist Emily McCartan to lead 'twice as much as before', a one-day intensive clay workshop at Cell Project Space. Working with young people from ‘Arts for All’, McCartan invited participants to collectively explore and connect with the clay through the repetition and exhaustion of various techniques. Working collaboratively the group developed a set of instructions, which were used to create large-scale ceramic forms. In doing so, McCartan asked the group to challenge their pre-existing knowledge of ceramics and what it should look like.

Emily McCartan (b. 1989, Nottingham, UK) is an artist based in London. Recent shows include: 'Mantel', at Copperfield, London (2018); 'If you can't stand the heat', at Roaming Projects, London (2018); ‘That continuous thing: artists and the ceramix studio, 1920-today’ at Tate St. Ives (2017); 'The Gloaming' at Gloam Gallery, Sheffield (2017) and ‘Fungus Press’, Turf Projects, London (2016). Emily works at Troy Town Art Pottery and is co-ordinator of Town Gas, an experimental ceramics course for young adults.
