Join us on our homepage for a special 48-hour live online screening of BETTER (2017), an early work by the London-based artist and musician Nina Cristante. This event marks the penultimate week of her solo exhibition at Cell Project Space, The Richest Man in Babylon. BETTER highlights Cristante’s long-standing interest in how the body's fascia and connective tissue hold trauma.
The video offers the artist’s distinctive take on ‘the body’ portraying it as a flayed, muscular ‘onesie’, in the style of early Renaissance anatomical studies, while delivering a probing, irreverent perspective on the medical profession. With its lo-fi visuals and hazy sound, BETTER epitomises Cristante’s hybrid approach to circulating audio and moving image material, a style rooted in her pivotal body of work, homework (2015) – a four-part series of spartan exercise routines featured on her Fitness Povero YouTube channel.
The Richest Man in Babylon is currently on view at the gallery, 12-6pm, Thursday to Sunday, until 24th November.
