Neverland connotes fantasy and fiction, the dream of an impossible reality that can only exist as a state of mind. Yet, it is the effect of reality on the personal experience of the individual that creates and fuels the imagination of future possibilities. Art as a process of re-invention does not simply transcribe our experience of reality. Like the processes triggered in the mind of the sleeper/dreamer - connections are made between the known and unknown, the old and the new. The 'dreaming' brain creates new networks and through the function of assimilation activates fluid and multiple perspectives. A desire to look 'anew' fosters the current style of hybridisation in contemporary culture.
Recently, sampling, mixing and collaging has become a way of interweaving ever-new information with interchanging representational styles and genres enabling an expansion of the repertoire with which one might explore contemporary culture. The artists in the show work with cultural issues from a perspective of strangeness. Their work adds a twist on the perception of the world around.
